Background: Lucy's father was an alchaholic. He abused her mother physically and kept her in fear of acting against his will. From the time she was a year and a half, Lucy was kept in confinement in a small room at the back of the house. She was left in her crib and often neglected for days at a time. She was never spoken to. The father permitted the mother to feed her from time, but often she seemed to be forgotten about. If Lucy ever cried or made any noise, her father would beat her. He never spoke to her, but made strange, dog-like noises. When she was three her mother became pregnant again, giving birth to a baby boy. The baby boy was put into the same room and died a few weeks later of starvation. He was burried in the backyard with no marker. Lucy's father beat her mother to death when she was 11. Shortly after, he commit suicide. Several hours later, when the police were called concerning a domestic dispute, Lucy was discovered. No one had even known she'd existed, not even the neighbors.

After Lucy was discovered, she was taken to a hospital where she was cared for malnurishment. She could not communicate and seemed (at first) very afraid. She did not cry or make any noise. After a few days, she became very curious. She had been kept in a dark room (there were boards over the windows) so her vision was very bad, and she lacked depth perception. She would touch things and feel them with her hands and then put them on her face. Sometimes she would put them in her mouth. She eventually began to realize that people were trying to teach her. She would point to things over and over until someone told her the name of it... but these names rarely ever stuck with her.

Although Douglas was the last name of the family that lived in the house in which Lucy was discovered, Lucy nor Hope are her names. There is no evidence of her real name, and Lucy does not seem to recall or mention any other name that she might have been called. One of the doctors at the hospital named her Lucy, and later Hope... because she needed it. After she was recovered (mostly) in health, Lucy was taken to be studied by scientists and psychologists (at Cherry Hollow's youth ward) to see if she could learn language. She had no where else to go and could not be placed in foster care because she could not communicate... Although several moral issues have been raised about this settlement. She has been there ever since.

Lucy appears to be younger than she is. Her body is very thin and frail. She often hunches over and has a difficult time walking straight. She keeps her hands tucked in or near her face at all times. Her vision is very poor. Because she was kept in a small crib for most of her life, she is rather short and dwarfed in size. Though she is 18 years old, she only appears to be 13 or 14.


Personality: Although she cannot communicate properly, Lucy has a very bright and cheerful disposition. She likes to learn the names of things, and people are naturally drawn to her. Her favorite words are "red balloon!" (probably because people seem to react well to it)
